Using a Tumbling Compost Bin Effectively
For making compost quickly and in an expedient manner, a tumbling compost bin is really ideal. Organic materials can be converted to compost by various means but the main objective should be to do that within a short time frame. With ordinary homemade compost bins a person needs to spend a significant time digging and turning over the compost. But with these compost bins just a few rotations of the crank-handle in a day would be sufficient. When the organic waste is recycled into compost in this manner you would get quick and amazing results in your backyard garden. This method is also environment friendly as no synthetic products are used as fertilizers.
Manufacturers of reputed bins claim that compost can be created within a few weeks instead of several months or even years taken by the ordinary compost procedures. DIY bins of this category are being increasingly popular due to their convenience of usage. A person just needs to fill up the bin with manure, lawn clippings, stable sweepings, garden prunings, leaves, and comfrey. All these materials would pass through the shredder present inside. One should avoid putting twigs, long grasses, or strappy leaves inside as those might get entangled in a ball. These balls do not break down easily or take a lot of time to disintegrate. A person might shred or chop up strappy leaves or long grasses and effectively use them in the compost bin.
Waste coffee grounds can also be used easily inside the tumbling compost bin as these have high nitrogenous content and are ideal as compost materials. Papers can also be collected from the office –shredder as these also contain carbon. For seeding of micro-organisms and bacteria it is suggested that a person uses a mixture of lime, bones, blood and one or two shovels of fresh compost. Afterwards sufficient water needs to be provided and the lid of the bin needs to be sealed tightly. If you find that the contents inside the bin are getting excessively dry, spin the compost bin/barrel in the yard for mixing up the contents along with a little addition of water. During the first few weeks you might notice the temperature of the compost to be quite high, but that is a good sign as many pest eggs and seeds get killed.
Many people due to shortage of finances prefer to go with a homemade bin. In that case certain aspects need to be taken care of. If any barrel or drum has been used previously to make compost, find out if that is totally clean and safe for making compost. Many people tend to use barrels that have been previously used for storing oils, chemicals, or some other harsh substances. These have to be avoided at any cost because the entire purpose of preparing organic compost would get nullified in that case. By using these bins effectively, you ensure that all the harmful pathogenic ingredients of organic products are optimally integrated with soil.
